Augustinian Monastery and Church of St. Giles and Our Lady Queen
The Augustinian Monastery and the Church of St. Giles and Our Lady Queen
A few steps from the square stands the former Augustinian monastery. It consists of an enclosed complex of buildings within the city walls. It was founded by the Rožmberk brothers in 1367 for the canons of the Order of St. Augustine. Shortly after the convent was established, the main monastery buildings and the Church of St. Giles were constructed.
Of the original monastery, only the cloister with the Chapel of St. John the Baptist has retained its original form, while its upper floor was altered several times in later periods.
Church of St. Giles and the Virgin Mary, Queen
The Church of St. Giles and the Virgin Mary, Queen of Heaven in Třeboň is located near Třeboň’s main Masaryk Square on Husova Street.
The church is connected to the Castle all the way to Masaryk Square via the “Long Corridor,” a passageway through the Budějovice (Břilice) City Gate and the southern wing of the monastery, as well as a covered bridge, so that the nobility could easily access the lord’s gallery during Mass.
Inside the church, you can view the Gothic statue of the Třeboň Madonna from 1400. It is one of the most beautiful works of Czech sculpture. Remnants of the imposing Gothic panel altar by the Master of Třeboň are now housed in the National Gallery in Prague.
