Tereziino (Terčino) Valley - Nové Hrady

Tereziino, also known as Terčino or Terezčino, Valley is an English-style forest park located about 1 km southwest of Nové Hrady in the valley of the Stropnice River in the Novohradské Mountains. The entire park is accessible free of charge with no restrictions throughout the year. There are two parking lots available: one in Údolí u Nových Hradů, a new one by the Stropnice River just past the intersection, and an older one right by the gate.

An educational trail runs through the park, introducing visitors to the park’s history and all the points of interest found here. Entry to the protected area is from Údolí pod Novými Hrady, near the turnoff to Horní Stropnice.

Terčino Valley is located 29 km from the Třeboň Dvorce accommodation.

History of Terčino Valley

Originally a landscape park, it covers an area of approximately 138 hectares. The site originally served the nobility as a pheasantry, the origins of which can be traced back to as early as 1667. Less than a century later—specifically in 1756—the pheasantry was transformed, at the initiative of Countess Terezie Buquoiová, into a vast natural landscape park called "Vallancherie." Today, the park is named after its founder. The countess took her idea of building an English forest park seriously, so she had not only exotic trees and shrubs planted here, but, following foreign models, various recreational structures—what we would today call recreational facilities—also began to spring up in the landscape. Between 1788 and 1797, a small private spa—now known as Lázničky—was built, and in 1803, the so-called Blue House, where the noblewoman enjoyed spending the summer months. The Blue House has survived to this day as a ruin, as it was largely destroyed by a flood in 1915.

Construction continued even after the countess’s death. Pavilions and small monuments with verse inscriptions were erected, and ponds were built. In 1817, an artificial waterfall was added, which remains an attraction to this day. It is fed by the Stropnice River itself via a millrace with sluice gates. From the waterfall, the trail continues through a deep rocky canyon. At the very end of the grounds lies Cuknštejn Fortress, built between 1488 and 1491. The structure is one of the best-preserved late Gothic fortresses of the regular type.

The nature trail leading through Tereziino Valley begins at the Entrance Gate from 1797, where visitors can park their cars. The trail is intended for pedestrians and is accessible year-round.

The nature trail is approximately 7 km long (the route can be shortened at any time as needed) and has 12 stops:

Among landscape architects, the Theresia Valley is considered one of the pinnacles of the Romantic-Sentimental period in landscape architecture. This national natural monument serves not only as an excellent place for walks and excursions, but also as an example of a landscape composition crafted with great artistry, which retains its charm and appeal throughout all seasons. Tereziino Valley is one of the most visited places in the Novohradské Mountains.
