Červená Lhota Castle
Červená Lhota Castle
This Renaissance castle is exceptional not only for its distinctive red color but also for its location surrounded by water. Its picturesque reflection is mirrored on the surface of the pond from all sides. A stone bridge connects it to the mainland.
From Třeboň, head toward Jindřichův Hradec. Červená Lhota is located 29 km from Třeboň. We recommend it as a full-day cycling trip.
The castle acquired its current Neo-Renaissance appearance only at the beginning of the 20th century. Its predecessor was originally a fortress standing on the rocky bank of a stream, later rebuilt into a Renaissance castle already surrounded by the waters of a new pond. The castle’s fairy-tale appearance is complemented by valuable historical interiors.
The tour of the castle lasts about 50 minutes, during which you will see 16 rooms representing the lifestyle of the nobility in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Červená Lhota Castle is the third most-visited castle in the South Bohemian Region
An interesting fact about Červená Lhota
Antonio Bruccio, the castle’s owner during the Thirty Years’ War, not only had a stone bridge built leading to the castle in place of an older wooden one but also attempted to establish a spa in nearby Deštná. A healing spring was miraculously discovered by a certain Kateřina Urbánková in 1599 at the site of a spring later discovered.
In its heyday, this spa was a very popular destination, rivaling even Karlovy Vary in popularity. A remnant of its former glory is the now-forgotten Deštěnky brand of mineral water.
